WALKING
Haltwhistle Burn
A varied 1.5 mile walk along the wooded valley of the Haltwhistle Burn leads from the town of Haltwhistle (on the A69) to Hadrian's Wall - crossing the B6318 Military Road - to Cawfields Picnic site and the Pennine Way. Hadrian's Wall / Once Brewed (Northumberland National Park)
The National Park Centre at Once Brewed (open March to October) provides the perfect introduction to walks along Hadrian's Wall and beyond. It is located on the B6318 Military Road, 1 mile west of Housesteads Roman Fort. The centre has an exhibition area, an audio-visual theatre with a selection of videos, a shop and a comprehensive information service. Tel: 01434 344396
Walltown Picnic Site (Northumberland National Park)
Off the B6318, near Greenhead, beside the Roman Army Museum. A former whinstone quarry on the line of Hadrian's Wall and the Pennine Way which has been developed for recreation and wildlife. Two short waymarked trails can be followed using leaflets available from the Information Centre at the quarry. Admission: Free
